Eleanor McKay receives MBE for Local StudiesCongratulations to our Bibliographic and Local Studies Librarian Eleanor McKay, who has been awarded an MBE for services to Local Studies in The Queen’s Birthday Honours list 2021.

Eleanor has worked tenaciously throughout her career, supporting communities across Argyll and Bute. She has also taken an active involvement in a range of projects including the World War 1 commemoration. Eleanor is a deserving recipient and we are proud to have her on the liveArgyll team.

A surprised and totally delighted Eleanor said: ‘The award means a huge amount. When you are just doing your job, you never expect your efforts to be rewarded in this way. I am very fortunate that my role as Local Studies Librarian has allowed me to work with a number of local people across Argyll and Bute (and further afield), and become involved with so many projects – particularly since 2014 with the various Great War commemorations.

‘I am very grateful to everyone who has contributed to exhibitions and research, all adding to the information we hold in our collections for future generations. On another level it is a privilege to represent the wider library community and realise that the work of librarians is recognised and valued, especially in the field of preserving heritage and culture.’

The Lord-Lieutenant of Argyll and Bute, Mrs Jane MacLeod, said: ‘I am so pleased to hear that Eleanor MacKay has been awarded an MBE. Anyone who has ever worked with Eleanor in her professional capacity will know of her incredible enthusiasm for local history and knowledge. She provided excellent support during the World War 1 commemoration planning and always with a great deal of good humour. This honour is very well deserved indeed.’
