A big thank you to our colleague Allan who is volunteering with Argyll & Bute Council Care for People Team – TSI, in the Oban and Lorn area, whilst we are closed. We caught up with him this week to see how he is getting on.

Tell us about yourself and how you are doing.

Hi there! My name is Allan Wright and I’m the Active Schools Coordinator for Oban, Lorn and the Isles, currently on furlough.

With all this good weather at the moment, I’m fence building and painting my house in between my stints as a Volunteer Coordinator.

Who are you volunteering with and what’s your role?

I’m a Volunteer Coordinator with Argyll & Bute Council Care for People Team – TSI, in the Oban and Lorn area.

Tell us about why you considered volunteering and what your volunteering role involves:

I wanted to play my part in helping my local community to support those who are either shielding or vulnerable at this time. The role involves receiving requests from the councils care for people team to help members of the public with tasks such as shopping or dog walking. I then work with our volunteer base to match the individual to someone that can help them out. The demand for requests has been fairly high but it is starting to get quieter now as everyone is getting used to their new routines.

What have been the highlights of your volunteering experience, so far?

It’s been a challenge but extremely rewarding when requests are complete. I have been overwhelmed at how helpful our local volunteers are, and have never struggled to fulfil a request, which shows just how willing everyone is to help.

What message do you have for people during COVID -19?

Lots of people need support at this time so if you haven’t already, just pick up the phone or pop your head over the garden fence to anyone you feel might be struggling. Even picking up a couple of things from the shops can make a huge difference to someone’s day! It’s important we all play our part in looking out for each other.

The TSI offer lots of volunteering opportunities and the more people who sign up the better.

Thanks Allan!
