After an incredible 45 years of dedication to Argyll’s library service, library legend Pam Horton is retiring from her role with liveArgyll, leaving behind an inspiring legacy of knowledge, kindness, and community spirit.
Pam’s story began back in October 1980, when she joined the library service through the Youth Opportunities Programme, working at Library Headquarters in Hunters Street, Dunoon. From those early days typing up coloured library cards, to her leadership as Senior Library Supervisor and later as Business Operations Officer, Pam’s passion for libraries and people has never faded.
Her warmth, humour, and encyclopaedic knowledge have shaped generations of staff and readers alike. Pam has witnessed (and helped steer!) huge changes, including the move from Argyll Street Library to the Queen’s Hall in 2018.
When COVID-19 forced closures across the country, Pam was part of the small, determined team that kept our library service afloat, guiding its return and helping reconnect our communities with the joy of reading.
Beyond her professionalism, Pam is known for her generosity, always ready with advice, encouragement, and the occasional gardening tip.
‘You have been a tower of strength – you take 45 years of library knowledge with you, and you will be deeply missed. Not just for this, but for the support you have shown the team over the years.’
Pam, thank you for everything you’ve done for liveArgyll and our communities over the past 45 years. We hope retirement brings you plenty of time for the things you love – karate, gardening, DIY, and maybe even perfecting your indoor bowling.
Happy retirement!
